Theatre players and local businesses have big heARTs

Normally known for their great work on stage, Coolum Theatre Players have proudly announced their first production for 2016 won’t in fact be on stage at all.

That’s because the Coolum Theatre Players’ Trivia Night will take place on Saturday, 12 March at Coolum Civic Centre and they’re delighted to announce all the profits from the evening will go to Coolum heARTs.

Founded in 2013 by Barb and Clive Holden, the not-for-profit organisation has changed the lives of many on the North Shore as the efforts continue to provide free access to the arts for people who live with mental illness, depression and anxiety, physical and intellectual disability, exposure to domestic violence and the effects of alcohol and drug abuse and social isolation.

The Holden’s’ offer a place of calm and creativity where members can focus on an activity that is both creative and therapeutic. Weekly classes include art, drumming, singing and creative writing.

Barb and Clive saw their organisation thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when Coolum heARTs was awarded the 2016 Coolum Australia Day Award as Community Group pf the Year. What some locals may not be aware is Clive has been a three-time finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. He is also currently a finalist in the 2016 Bald Archy for his painting of Bronwyn Bishop as The Joker. The exhibition opened in Canberra earlier this month and will soon tour throughout Australia.

Always keen to generously reciprocate, Clive has donated one of his paintings, Orangutan Hangover as the major prize for the Coolum Theatre Players next production The Addams Family, set to open on stage in the same wonderfully refurbished Coolum Civic Centre on Friday, 20 May.

Tickets for the Trivia Night are only $15.00 and your chance to win Clive’s work will start on the night when raffle tickets will go on sale. The winner will be drawn at the last performance of The Addams Family on Sunday, 29 May. Tables of up to eight are available and it’s fine to BYO drinks and nibbles.

One proud Coolum Theatre Players sponsor who will also be supporting the Trivia Night is the Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Kerryn Vincart and her team will be bringing a table of supporters on the night and she was delighted to hear other local businesses have come on board.

There will be a $200 cash prize for the winning team and spot prizes from Domino’s Pizza, multiple raffles including a two-night stay at The Heavens B&B, passes to Aussie World, Australia Zoo, Coolum Aqua Park, Birch Carroll & Coyle, dining vouchers, gifts and more.

If you would like to book your tickets to The Addams Family or the Trivia Night, go to our upcoming shows page for more information or phone 5446 2500. Orangutan Hangover will be on display for viewing at the Marcoola Community Bank branch until the Trivia Night.

About the Painting

“Last week …… or was it yesterday….I woke, not sure where I’d been , or in fact not sure of who I  was exactly.

Apparently there had been a party in my Cranium and although uninvited by me, the host, all manner of animal species had been my guests.

A proud rooster with the most amazing bejeweled plumage was guest of honour and although not bosom buddies with a noisy cockatoo, they both appeared to get on at the party.

I vaguely recall that a small green tree frog leapt about with careless abandon not showing fear of the bird guests, but stared at me intensely.

The Blue Bird of happiness is nesting in my house and presiding over the whole affair.

I am not sure, as you possibly have noticed, if I am an Orangutan or a reflection in the Wine glass.

Am I in the middle of an amazing and extraordinary dream, or is this the Mother of all hangovers………..tomorrow will tell!!”
