“A Touching and Hilarious Journey of Transformation”
The Full Monty is one of the most celebrated British plays of the 2010s. adapted from the successful 1997 movie of the same name.
Both written by Simon Beaufoy, and both set in Sheffield, UK, it tells the story of six unemployed steelworkers who, in the face of economic hardship, decide to form a male striptease act.
The play is renowned for its combination of humour and pathos, for its lightness and darkness, and its themes of family, masculinity, friendship and self-worth.
Gaz is a former steelworker, now unemployed, and struggling to maintain a relationship with his son, Nathan. After seeing a queue outside a male strip show, Gaz becomes a man with a plan –
Gaz enlists his best friend, Dave, and four other men — Gerald, Lomper, Horse, and Guy — each grappling with their own issues.
Together, they form a bond as they move towards opening night and realise that it’s now or never….Gerald, a former foreman, hides his unemployment from his wife; Lomper is a shy and lonely security guard; Horse, despite his age, hopes to prove he’s still got the moves; and Guy, though not the brightest, brings charm and a surprising talent to the group.
Here’s a summary of the major roles available! There will be lots of supporting parts available too which may involve doubling up, with 2 roles being played by the same actor….. We’ll summarise these in due course.
Gaz – male, looks 30-45
Gaz’s journey is central to the play. Spontaneous and full of pride, his determination to provide for his son drives him to take bold risks as he transforms into a responsible father.
Dave – male, looks 30-45
Dave’s struggle with body image and his relationship with his wife adds a poignant layer to the story. His participation in the Full Monty reflects his journey towards self-acceptance and reconciliation with his wife.
Gerald – male, 45 upwards
Gerald, the former mill supervisor, faces the shame and lack of pride associated with unemployment. Hiding his unemployment from his wife, he believes self-worth comes from providing for her, and so joins the show through necessity, finding strength he never knew he had.
Lomper – male, looks 25-35
Lomper is initially withdrawn and isolated but finds friendship and a sense of belonging with the group. His newfound confidence helps him embark on a new relationship.
Horse – male (actor of colour only), looks 45 upwards
Horse’s character brings humour and wisdom, challenging stereotypes about age, ethnicity and physical ability. His participation in the show is a declaration of vitality and self-affirmation.
Guy – male, looks 25 -35
Guy’s simplicity and openness endear him to his friends and to the audience. His unexpected talent and positive outlook contribute hugely to the group’s success and fully underscore the theme of self-discovery.
Nathan – male, 18-20 but looks younger
Gaz’s son. Torn between his mum and dad, he’s smart, honest, and more mature than his dad sometimes. Nathan wants to spend time with Gaz but also wants him to be responsible. Even though Gaz can be unreliable, Nathan still loves him and wants to believe in him.
Mandy – female, looks 30-50
Gaz’s ex-wife, Mandy is practical, responsible, and focused on what’s best for their son, Nathan. Mandy cares about Nathan’s wellbeing and wants him to have a stable life, which is why she often argues with Gaz — especially when he can’t pay child support. Mandy truly represents the voice of reason and a parent trying to protect her child.
Jean – female, looks 30-50
Dave’s wife, she is strong, practical, and caring; working hard to support the family, especially when Dave loses his job. She’s loyal and clearly loves Dave, but she’s frustrated by his low self-esteem and lack of confidence. Jean is a down-to-earth woman who represents the struggles and strength of working-class women during tough times.
