Mothers, old and new, set to grace the stage

By | Motherhood The Musical | No Comments

Announcing the cast of Motherhood the Musical, following a successful audition process, the 4 leads are:

  • Amy, is Erin Low from Brisbane (who played Sister Amnesia in our production of Nunsense in 2014) – a naive young woman about to have her first child;
  • Brooke, is Susie Bushnell (from North Lakes) – a hard working lawyer who barely sees her kids;
  • Barb, is Amanda Zinn (well known from Caloundra Chorale) a stressed out mother of five, and
  • Tasha, is Lou Lou McDonald (a Sunshine Coast actress) a single mother seeking to balance work, her family and a divorce.

Julia Loaney, last seen as grandma in Addams Family, makes a cameo appearance as as Amy’s mother – not 102 years old in this one!

Thanks to all the females who came along to audition, both Director Jennifer Rousset and Musical Director JR had a difficult decision-making process due to the high standard of talent.

We are thrilled that fifteen year old Harper Ramsey, who played the March Hare in our pantomime ‘Alice in Wonderland’ last year, was awarded this prestigious bursary.  He comes from a family with long involvement in the arts and started acting with Drama Fun’s home school drama class when he was 8 years old. His first notable role was the following year as Scar in an adaptation of ‘The Lion King’.

Harper was with the Eumundi Indee Theatre for 3 years, performing in multiple pantomimes and plays, including the role of Bunty in their centenary production of ‘Seven Little Australians’. He also began to study other aspects of performing including dance and voice.

In January, 2015, Harper joined Johanna Wallace’s Little Seed Theatre Company. Since then he has immersed himself in the varied classes and workshops with guest tutors covering physical theatre, character development, improvisation, musical theatre, and Stanislavsky Method.

He currently takes part in the Secondary Acting Masterclass and Musical Theatre and is a teen mentor to the Primary Acting Masterclass. His roles with Little Seed so far have been Narrator 2 in ‘The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza’ (winning 2nd Best Play at the 2015 Sunshine Coast Youth Theatre Festival), the Albatross in ‘Alice Dreaming’, and most recently the Comedian in this year’s SCTF winning play, ‘A Dollar’, on 14th August. Harper will next be on stage as Joseph in Little Seed’s December Musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.

Coolum Theatre Players acknowledge that today’s youth are the future of local theatre and wish to encourage their passion for the performing arts. This Award will be used for skills development courses, mentoring programs and relevant items which may assist in Harper’s art’s development.  Congratulations from us all.

Meet Jennifer Rousset, director of “Motherhood the Musical”

Jennifer has been involved in live theatre for about 30 years (20 of them in the UK), including very large musicals, comedies, dramas and children’s theatre.

Leaving her Pro-Am musical theatre society in England and moving to the Sunshine Coast 12 years ago, she immediately embraced the local theatre scene.  Since then, she has acted, choreographed, sung, danced and directed numerous productions from Noosa to Caloundra and sees no reason to stop any time soon.

Her most recent on stage performance with Coolum Theatre Players was in “Four Weddings and an Elvis” where she played the chapel owner/marriage celebrant in all four scenes.

Jennifer lives in Twin Waters with her husband of 30 years Gil and they have 2 sons in their 20’s.  She works full time for Life Education Qld (Healthy Harold) a well-known and loved charity since 1979, a job she enjoys very much.

“Motherhood the Musical” will be the fourth production Jennifer’s been involved in with Coolum Theatre Players.
